I am a father, husband, hiker, and math enthusiast. I have been working in education for 20+ years. I have had the good fortune of teaching middle school math for 10 years, being a math coach, curriculum coordinator, and director of curriculum and assessment. I am now honored to be part of the Riverside County Office of Education Math Team in Instructional Services.
In my free time I love hiking and playing games with my wife and son.
I truly believe that the teaching and learning of mathematics in the United States needs to change drastically. The focus of my blog will often be elementary math. There needs to be significantly more focus on student sense-making and a drastically decreased focus on teaching students to do what computers can do for them.
To be clear, students can’t make sense of the mathematics if they aren’t the ones grappling with the mathematics.
